Originally published in 1948 in the United Kingdom by Waddington Games, it is now published by the American games and toy company Hasbro. It was previously published by Parker Brothers in the United States (which was acquired by Hasbro).

The game is set in a building in the United Kingdom, where the player plays as a guest of the building, and the goal is to find out who killed the master Dr. Black, the murder weapon and the murder room. The game is advanced by drawing clue cards, asking questions and making accusations, and players need to use the clue cards in their hands to deduce the truth of the case. Game skills include psychological warfare, misleading opponents, and making good use of game mechanics.
