Chess, also known as European chess, is a two-player strategy game with a long history and deep cultural heritage. Originating somewhere in Asia, it probably spread from India to Persia between the 7th and 10th centuries, and then through Islamic culture to Europe, where it gradually evolved into what we know today.
The chess board is composed of 64 small squares of 8×8, which are divided into two kinds of dark and light squares, respectively arranged alternately with black and white colors. Each side of the board has a set of 16 pieces, including 1 king, 1 queen, 2 elephants (or signs), 2 horses, 2 chariots (or roars) and 8 soldiers (or pawns). Each piece has its own unique rules of movement, from the king to the soldier, the way each piece moves reflects its military function and combat characteristics.
The object of the game is to win by placing the opponent's king in a situation where he cannot escape through clever chess layout and strategic use, that is, to "checkmate" the opponent, force the opponent to make legal moves while obeying the rules, and finally "checkmate" the opposing king.
In chess, different pieces working together can form a variety of tactics and strategies, such as blocking, diverting, sacrificing, attacking, etc. There are endless variations in the game, and each move requires the player to think carefully about the possible ripple effects and long-term effects. Therefore, chess is not only an intellectual game, but also an art and science.
